However, since Tesla's entire roof will require more tiles than other solar instillations, it might cost a bit more overall. Each solar tile will cost about $42 per square foot, which is cheaper than traditional solar panels installed over shingles. In the months leading up to the announcement, many analysts were predicting Tesla's solar roofs would cost so much that they'd price themselves out of the marketplace. As exciting as that is, it's not the only news. It was recently announced that Tesla has begun taking orders for its new solar roof. Since then, investors and the general public were eager to learn what this all meant for their homes, the environment, and perhaps most importantly, their pocket books. At that time, Musk stated that this transformation began when the company he owned, Tesla, bought SolarCity, the largest solar energy provider in America, for $2.6 billion. Tesla said it would be installing equipment in the Buffalo factory over the next few months.Roughly nine months ago, Elon Musk spoke to reporters about his plans to revolutionize the use of solar power on rooftops. Panasonic makes the photovoltaic cells used in the solar tiles. But eventually all production will move to a joint Tesla and Panasonic Corp factory in Buffalo, New York. Palo Alto, California-based Tesla is making the solar tiles at its Fremont, California, factory initially. But it's the only sensible vision of the future,'' Musk said. "It will be very difficult and it will take a long time, and there will be some stumbles along the way. ![]() He expects the initial ramp-up to be slow. Musk would not say how many orders the company expects to get this year. "The cost can be rolled into the homeowner's mortgage payments and paid for over time.'' Tesla said the typical homeowner could expect to pay $21.85 per square foot for a Tesla solar roof. Over that time period, Tesla estimates, the homeowner would save $8,500. The roof would be eligible for a $15,500 federal tax credit and would generate an estimated $62,100 in electricity over 30 years. That includes a $7,000 Tesla Powerwall, a battery unit that stores the energy from the solar panels and powers the home. It would cost $69,100 to install a solar roof with 40% solar tiles on a 2,600-square-foot roof in suburban Detroit, according to Tesla's web site. Tesla said the solar tiles cost $42 per square foot to install, making them far more costly than slate, which costs around $17 per square foot.īut homes would only need between 30-40% of their roof tiles to be solar the rest would be Tesla's cheaper non-solar tiles which would blend in with the solar ones. They can also put down a refundable US$1,000 deposit to reserve a place in line. Tesla's web site includes a calculator where potential buyers can estimate the cost of a solar roof based on the size of their home, the amount of sunlight their neighborhood receives and federal tax credits. "It has gone through the same hail, fire and wind testing that normal roofs endure.'' "The roof is guaranteed for the life of the home, which is longer than the 20-year lifespan for a typical, non-solar roof,'' Musk said. The aesthetics are that good,'' he said in a conference call with media. ![]() "When you have this installed on your house, you'll have the best roof in the neighborhood. Buyers will want Tesla's roof, because it looks as good or better than a normal roof. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said one of the drawbacks to home solar installations has been the solar panels themselves. The solar tiles contain photovoltaic cells that are invisible from the street. They're designed to look like a traditional roof, with options that replicate slate or terracotta tiles. The glass tiles were unveiled by Tesla last autumn just before the company merged with solar panel maker SolarCity Corp. Installations outside the US will begin next year. ![]() Installations will begin next month in the United States, starting with California.
